Disulfiram is a new promissing medicine to counter chronic Lyme disease. The characteristics of disulfiram are already known because of the use for other treatments.
On this site you can find more information about the use of disulfiram to overcome chronic Lyme disease or at least minimize the negatieve effects.

Background information

Annually millions of people get bitten by a tick. About 20% of the ticks are infected with the Borrelia-bacterium which causes that a large percentage of this population will eventually suffer Lyme disease.
Once you get the diagnose of Lyme disease an antibiotic can cure the disease in case of rapid respons and accurate treatment. However, if the disease isn’t tackled timely (f.e. the fact the patient was unaware of the condition) the patient will develop chronic Lyme disease.
More information about the Lyme disease.

Scientists discovered that treatment with disulfiram can eventually cure chronic Lyme/Lymeborreliose or at least minimize the disorders/negative effects.
There are multiple studies which show encouraging result for the treatment with disulfiram which can be found under ARTICLES.

Take into consideration that disulfiram is a well-known medicine against alcohol-dependency and can therefore cause side effects when using alcohol (wine, beer) of products which contain alcohol (handsoap, shampoo, detergent). This means that alertness is required when using these products.
Drinking alcohol while using disulfiram (Antabuse) can cause serious illness.
Disulfiram (effective ingredient in Antabuse) influences the conversion of alcohol in the body. Becasue of the enzyme inhibition certain degradation products will not be removed and this can cause unpleasant reactions.
This is also the reason that the dosage of disulfiram is build incrementally and with great care.
Despite all these negative information and side effects, the treatment with disulfiram provides a lot of promising results. Patients experience a lot less brain fog, more energy and less other complaints.

Disulfiram medication (Refusal or Antabuse) is available in dosages of 250mg and 400mg. These dosages are too high to start on a responsible dose without side-effects and lower dosages are required to (I) start with a low dose and (II) increase the dose with small steps.
The traject of increase should be established in consultation between practitioner and patient.
In order to increase the dose of disulfiram in an accurate way and on a gradual scale the patient needs the lower dosages which are compounded by a pharmacist.

Regenboog Apotheek Bavel (Netherlands) is a compounding pharmacy which can provide the disulfiram in other dosages than the registered dosages.
All these dosages of disulfiram are tablets/pills:

• 200mg
• 100mg
• 50mg
• 20mg
• 5mg

With these dosages a gradual scale can be achieved in order to set up the patient in accordance with the consulted traject.
These tablets/pills will be delivered in a strip so the patient only needs to use one pouch per moment of intake. This pouch contains the prescribed dose.
On every pouch is printed which tablets/pills are in the pouch and on wich day they should be taken.

How

The Borrelia-bacterium needs certain enzymes to operate. Disulfiram destroys this enzyme, which results in the fact that the bacterium can’t execute essential processes (dehydrogenase) in order to survive. The disulfiram therefore prevents the possibility of these processes which will eventually lead to the death of the bacterium.

For whom?

Disulfiram medication is for chronic Lyme patients who want to minimize the side-effects of this disease. For scientific data, check Articles.
